The Northern Pikes are a Canadian rock group formed in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1984, originally comprising Jay Semko, Bryan Potvin, Merl Bryck, and Glen Hollingshead. After the departure of Merl Bryck and Glen Hollingshead in 1985, the band continued with Jay Semko, Bryan Potvin, and later drummer John Schmid, releasing two independent EPs, The Northern Pikes (1984) and Scene in North America (1985), which attracted the attention of Virgin Records and led to a major label signing in 1986. Their debut Virgin album, Big Blue Sky (1987), featured the single "Teenland", followed by Secrets of the Alibi (1988) with hits "Wait for Me" and "Hopes Go Astray". The 1990 release Snow in June became their most successful record, propelled by the single "She Ain't Pretty", which received heavy MuchMusic rotation and a Juno nomination in 1991. Subsequent albums Neptune (1992) and Gig (1993) preceded the band’s initial retirement in July 1993. A greatest‑hits compilation, Hits and Assorted Secrets 1984-1993 (1999), revived touring, and the group released independent albums Truest Inspiration (2001) and It's a Good Life (2003). Collaborations included a 2007 EP with Les Stroud, Long Walk Home, and a 2019 collaboration with cellists on "The Things I Do for Money" for a film soundtrack. In 2012, the band was inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and they continued to record, with Forest of Love released in 2019 and Time to Time following in 2023.
