Morning Runner, an English alternative rock band, was formed in 2003 in Reading, Berkshire. The group consisted of vocalist/guitarist Matthew Jonathan Greener, drummer Ali Clewer, bassist Tom Derrett, and pianist Chris "Fields" Wheatcroft. Greener initially started as a solo artist but soon recruited Derrett and Clewer to form the band. Wheatcroft joined later, contributing significantly to their melodic sound. Morning Runner gained traction with their debut EP Drawing Shapes, released in May 2005, which received positive reviews from outlets like NME and The Guardian. Their first single "Work" was released earlier that year on May 2nd. In November 2004, the band signed with Parlophone after initially being with Faith & Hope. Morning Runner's debut album Wilderness Is Paradise Now was released in March 2006, preceded by the top 20 single "Burning Benches". The album received critical acclaim but did not achieve significant commercial success. Despite this, the band continued to tour extensively, performing at major festivals such as T in the Park and V Festival. In late 2007, Morning Runner announced their split due to commercial pressures from Parlophone, marking the end of their career.
