Nino Sanzogno was born on April 13, 1911 in Venice, Italy. He studied violin and composition at the Liceo Musicale (music lyceum) and conducting in Vienna. In 1937, he became resident conductor at La Fenice in Venice and conducted the RAI Milan Symphony Orchestra. His first performance at La Scala was in 1939. Sanzogno specialized in contemporary works, premiering operas including David by Milhaud and Dialogues des Carmélites by Poulenc. He inaugurated the Piccola Scala in 1955 and conducted Joan Sutherland's first complete opera studio recording of Rigoletto with Decca Records in 1961. Notable recordings include Wozzeck by Berg, Il matrimonio segreto by Cimarosa, and Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti. Sanzogno died on May 4, 1983 in Milan.
