Sir John Rowland Tomlinson (born 22 September 1946) was an English operatic bass from Oswaldtwistle. Tomlinson trained as a civil engineer at Manchester University before beginning a career in opera at age 21. The singer studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and with Otakar Kraus. Tomlinson performed with the Royal Opera and the English National Opera. Between 1988 and 2006, the singer performed at the Bayreuth Festival in roles including Wotan, King Marke, and Hagen. Tomlinson received the CBE in 1997 and recorded the album Messiah – Arias and Choruses in 2002. The singer received the Knight Bachelor honour in 2005. In 2007, the artist released the albums Great Scenes & Arias and La Forza del destino. In 2008, Tomlinson created the title role in the opera The Minotaur and released the album Grands Airs d'Opéra. Tomlinson was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal in 2014.
