Richard Farnes, born in 1964, is a British conductor. He began as a chorister at King’s College in Cambridge before studying at Eton College and later at the Royal Academy of Music and National Opera Studio in London. Farnes made his debut at the Royal Opera House in 2002 with Giuseppe Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. He served as music director of Opera North from 2004 to 2016, conducting notable operas including Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw and Richard Wagner’s complete Der Ring des Nibelungen, which won the Royal Philharmonic Society Conductor of the Year Award in 2017. Farnes has also directed orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Philharmonic.
