Yuli Turovsky, born June 7, 1939 in Moscow, was a Russian-Canadian cellist and conductor. He began his cello studies at age seven and later enrolled at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory under Galina Kozoloupova. Turovsky won the USSR Cello Competition in 1969 and placed second in the Prague Spring International competition in 1970. In 1976, he left the Soviet Union with his family and settled in Montreal in 1977. There, he performed as a duo with his wife Eleonora Leonova-Turovsky and later formed I Musici de Montréal, an internationally recognized chamber orchestra, in 1983. Turovsky also served as director of the Orford Arts Center from 1996 to 1999. He was awarded the National Order of Quebec in June 2010 and received an Opus Prize in January 2012. In his later years, Turovsky founded Nouvelle Génération, an orchestra for his students, before passing away on January 15, 2013.
