Sven‑Bertil Gunnar Evert Taube was born in Stockholm on 24 November 1934 and entered the public eye as a singer and actor. His early exposure to music began at age 14 when he learned guitar, and while traveling across Europe he cultivated an interest in folk traditions, which later informed his recordings. In 1954 he released his debut album Swedish Folksongs And Ballads on Folkways Records, featuring a cover of his father Evert Taube’s composition; the record established his reputation as a faithful interpreter of Swedish folk repertoire. Taube’s career unfolded chronologically through a steady stream of studio releases and theatrical work. After the 1956 EP Sven‑Bertil Gunnar Evert Taube Sjunger Visor Av Carl Michael Bellman Och Birger Sjöberg, he recorded two landmark Bellman collections, Carl Michael Bellman (1960) and Carl Michael Bellman Volym 2 (1963), which together sold more copies than any other disc in Sweden and introduced a new, earth‑bound realism to Bellman performance. The 1961 album Nils Ferlin showcased the poems of Nils Ferlin set to music by Lille Bror Söderlundh, while the 1962 release Skillingtryck Och Andra Fina Visor Från Flera Sekler broadened his folk catalogue. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Sven‑Bertil Gunnar Evert Taube recorded albums dedicated to his father’s work, including Evert Taube (1970) and 12 Visor Av Evert Taube (1972), and ventured into international material with Sven‑Bertil Gunnar Evert Taube Sjunger Mikis Theodorakis (1974) and Sven‑Bertil Gunnar Evert Taube Sjunger Léo Ferré (1981). His musical output continued into the 1980s and 1990s with releases such as Tango (1990), A Swedish Musical Odyssey (1977), and the compilation Sven‑Bertil Gunnar Evert Taube Sjunger Evert Taube 1950‑93 (1993). The 2007 album Alderville Road revisited his father’s songs, earning critical praise for its faithful interpretation. In 2001 he released Taube Sjunger Taube, an album of his own compositions, and later compilations Sven‑Bertil Gunnar Evert Taube: Ett Samlingsalbum 1959‑2001 (2004) and Homage (2014) highlighted his enduring influence. His final studio effort, Homage, Vol. 2 (2015), closed a career spanning six decades. Taube’s achievements include the 1995 Guldbagge Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Händerna and a 2011 award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for En enkel till Antibes. His 2009 portrayal of Henrik Vanger in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo earned a 45th Guldbagge nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Sven‑Bertil Gunnar Evert Taube passed away in London on 11 November 2022, leaving a legacy defined by meticulous preservation of Swedish folk music and a respected body of work that continues to be celebrated posthumously.
