Kimiko Itoh (伊藤 君子) was born on 11 July 1946 in Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Japan, and trained in oil painting at Musashino Art University before studying jazz vocal technique under Yasushi Sawada. Her professional debut came in 1982 with the album Birdland, and she signed with EPIC/Sony Records in 1986, winning a Japanese jazz vocal prize that same year. In 1987 she released For Lovers Only, followed in 1989 by Follow Me, which reached number 16 on the Radio & Records Contemporary Jazz charts; the title track "Follow Me" became a notable single. Subsequent releases included A Natural Woman (1990), Standards My Way (1993), and Sophisticated Lady (1995). In 1997 she performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival alongside pianist Makoto Ozone, and the live recording At the Montreux Jazz Festival was issued. The 2000 album Kimiko, produced by Ozone, earned her a Swing Journal jazz disk grand prix for Japanese vocalist. Later works such as Once You've Been in Love (2004) and the compilation Best of Best (2007) were released, and her cover of "River of Crystals" from Follow Me was featured in the 2004 film Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. Itoh's career is marked by consistent chart presence, multiple Swing Journal awards, and international performances, underscoring her influence in Japanese vocal jazz.
