Rainer Riehn, born on November 12, 1941 in Danzig, Germany, was a composer and conductor. He studied musicology at universities including Mainz, Zurich, and Berlin, and composition under Gottfried M. Koenig in Utrecht. In 1969, Riehn co-founded the Ensemble Musica Negativa with Heinz-Klaus Metzger. Riehn's works include Chants de Maldoror (1965/66), an electronic composition based on Lautréamont’s prose poetry. He also completed Arnold Schönberg’s orchestration of Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde for chamber ensemble, premiered by Ensemble Musica Negativa in 1983. Riehn died on June 9, 2015, in Berlin. The album Chants de Maldoror: Electronic Music From the Institute of Sonology, Utrecht, 1965–71 was released in April 2016.
