Romano Gandolfi was an Italian choral and orchestral conductor. Drawn to music from childhood through his mother’s involvement in a local church choir, he studied at the Conservatorio Arrigo Boito di Parma and later trained in choral conducting under Roberto Benaglio. In the late 1960s he became principal conductor of the choir of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and in the 1970s returned to La Scala in Milan at the invitation of Claudio Abbado, remaining there until 1983 before becoming director of the choir of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. He also collaborated with major opera houses including La Scala, the Rome Opera, and the Teatro de la Zarzuela, and took part in notable recordings such as Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra and Petite Messe Solennelle with Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti, and later founded the Giuseppe Verdi Symphonic Choir of Milan in the 1990s. He died on February 17, 2006.
