The Misunderstood were an American psychedelic rock band from Riverside, California, that formed in 1963. The ensemble was founded by the musicians Rick Brown, Rick Moe, and George Phelps and are famous for being influential pioneers of psychedelic rock and for their innovative use of steel guitar and live light shows. Early in their career, the group relocated to London with the assistance of their manager, the broadcaster John Peel. Their discography includes the debut single “You Don't Have to Go” (1966) and the influential recording “I Can Take You to the Sun” (1966), which featured the guitarist Tony Hill. Despite their limited output before disbanding in 1969, the ensemble achieved professional recognition through posthumous releases such as Before the Dream Faded (1982) and The Lost Acetates 1965–1966 (2004). Their track “I Can Take You to the Sun” was later included in Record Collector’s list of the “100 Greatest Psychedelic Records”.
