Tangier was formed in 1984 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, by songwriter and guitarist Doug Gordon, who served as the band's principal guitarist and songwriter. The original line‑up featured vocalist Bill Mattson, guitarist Rocco Mazzella, bassist Mike Kost, and drummer Mark Hopkins, and the group quickly began performing in local clubs, opening for acts such as Cinderella and gaining modest regional attention. In 1985 the band released its self‑titled debut album Tangier, which established their hard‑rock sound but did not achieve national chart placement. The following year the group signed with Atco Records and released Four Winds (1989), produced by veteran producer Andy Johns; the single "On The Line" peaked at number 67 on the U.S. Hot 100, while "Southbound Train" received moderate airplay. In 1991 the band issued its final studio album Stranded, featuring the single "Stranded" and a music video that included actress Pamela Anderson; the album marked a lineup change with Mike LeCompt joining as vocalist and guitarist. After touring and a brief period of creative activity, Tangier disbanded in 1992, and its members pursued separate projects; Doug Gordon continued to write, produce, and perform with other artists, while Mike LeCompt remains active in the Philadelphia music scene.
