The Tátrai Quartet, a Hungarian classical string quartet, was founded in 1946 by Vilmos Tátrai. The group initially consisted of leading members from the Budapest Capital Orchestra and later the Hungarian State Concert Orchestra. In 1948, they won first prize at the Bartók String Quartet Competition. Throughout their career, the quartet recorded extensively for labels such as Hungaroton, Telefunken, and Muza, releasing albums including String Quartets Op. 64 Nos. 1-6 (1977) and String Quintets D Major K.593 / E Flat Major K.614 (1988). They were awarded the Kossuth Prize in 1958 and performed over 2,000 concerts with a repertoire of more than 300 works. The quartet also gave first performances of 72 Hungarian works and Hungarian premieres of 64 foreign compositions. Vilmos Tátrai led the group for its first 40 years until his death in 1999.
