Oliviero De Fabritiis was an Italian conductor and composer born on June 13, 1902, in Rome. He studied music with Licinio Refice and Setaccialo before performing his debut at the Teatro Nazionale in 1920. De Fabritiis served as artistic secretary at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma between 1932 and 1943. In 1937, he inaugurated summer performances at the Baths of Caracalla with the opera Lucia di Lammermoor. He conducted in Verona from 1948 until 1980. De Fabritiis collaborated with Beniamino Gigli for recordings of Andrea Chénier, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly. In 1951, he led a series of performances in Mexico City with Maria Callas. He conducted the 1956 television production of Madama Butterfly, which launched the career of Anna Moffo, and the soundtrack for a film version of Tosca. In 1960, he conducted Leontyne Price’s debut operatic album, The Blue Album. He later recorded Mefistofele with Luciano Pavarotti, Mirella Freni, and Montserrat Caballé. De Fabritiis died in Rome on August 12, 1982.
