Giovanni Sgambati, born on May 28, 1841, in Rome, Italy, was an Italian pianist and composer. He began composing sacred music and gained experience as a singer and conductor during his early education in Trevi, Umbria. In 1860, Sgambati returned to Rome to promote German music, which was then largely rejected in Italy. With the support of Franz Liszt, he directed concerts featuring his own compositions. In 1869, he co-founded the Liceo Musicale di Santa Lucia with Ettore Pinelli. His first album of songs was published in 1870, followed by his first symphony in 1881. Sgambati's works include "Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra" and "Sinfonia No. 2", as well as numerous piano compositions that achieved enduring success. He received the Commander of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus in 1901. Sgambati passed away on December 14, 1914, in Rome.
