Andrew Jonathan Penny was born in 1952 in Kingston upon Hull, England. He is a British conductor who studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and pursued postgraduate studies with Charles Groves. From 1982 to 2022, Penny served as the musical director of the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra. His career breakthrough came with his complete recording cycle of Malcolm Arnold's symphonies. In 1999, he conducted two performances of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 as part of Hull’s millennium celebrations. His works include Concertino pour guitare et orchestre (1999), Shakespeare Overtures, Vol. 1 (2010), and Victoria and Merrie England (Complete Ballet) (2021). Penny was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2014 for his services to music.
