Bjarte Engeset, born on August 25, 1958, in Ørsta, Norway, is a conductor and professor of conducting. He studied music at the University of Georgia, Grieg Akademiet in Norway, and Sibelius Academy in Finland. His breakthrough came in 1991 when he was invited to the Tanglewood Music Center Seminar of Conductors, where he studied under Seiji Ozawa, Gustav Meier, Simon Rattle, and Marek Janowski. Engeset served as chief conductor of Tromsø Symphony Orchestra and the Norwegian Wind Ensemble, and as artistic director of Northern Norway's Northern Lights Festival and Opera Nord. In 2007, he became chief conductor and artistic director of Sweden’s DalaSinfonietta until 2012. His extensive touring includes performances in Scandinavia, Britain, Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Estonia, and the United States. Engeset has recorded several dozen CDs for labels including Naxos, EMI, Klara, and cpo, notably featuring music by Scandinavian composers like Grieg, Sibelius, and Tveitt.
