Jane Rhodes was a French opera singer born Jeannine Marie Andrée Rhodes on March 13, 1929, in Paris. She studied at the Conservatoire supérieur de musique and performed in the chorus of the Théâtre du Châtelet before making her solo debut as Marguerite in La Damnation de Faust in 1953. Rhodes performed roles including Tosca, Salomé, and Carmen. In 1957, she recorded the role of Renata in L'Ange de feu under Charles Bruck, receiving two Grand Prix du Disque. She joined the Opéra de Paris in 1958 and debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1960. Rhodes appeared as Carmen in the 1962 film The Drama of Carmen directed by Leonard Bernstein. Her discography included the recordings La Voix humaine (1976), Mireille (1979), and Mélodies de Duparc (1979). She was named a Commandeure of the Order of Arts and Letters. Rhodes died on May 7, 2011, in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
