Windir, a Norwegian black metal band from Sogndal, was founded by Terje "Valfar" Bakken. The group initially started as Valfar's solo project, releasing the demos Sognariket and Det gamle riket between 1994 and 1995. Their debut album, Sóknardalr, was released in March 1997 under Head Not Found. Windir's music blended black metal with folk elements and Norse mythology, often featuring lyrics in the Sognamål dialect. The band's second album, Arntor (1999), marked a significant shift towards incorporating more folklore into their compositions. In 2001, Windir released 1184, which saw the band transitioning from a solo project to a full group with additional members. Their final studio album, Likferd, was released in October 2003. Tragically, Valfar died in January 2004 due to hypothermia, and the band disbanded shortly after. In tribute, Windir released the double CD compilation Valfar, Ein Windir later that year and a DVD titled Sognametal in 2005.
