Pēteris Vasks was born on April 16, 1946 in Aizpute, Latvia. He began his musical education at the local music school, learning piano and violin, before studying double bass and composition at the Emīls-Dārziņš Music School and the Lithuanian Academy of Music in Vilnius.Vasks' compositions gained recognition in the 1970s, with notable works such as "Musica dolorosa" (1983). His breakthrough came with Lauda (1986) and Cantabile (1979). Throughout his career, Vasks has received numerous accolades, including three Grand Music Awards of Latvia for works such as "Litene" (1993), "Distant Light" (1998), and his Symphony No. 2 (2000). He was also honored with the Herder Prize in 1996 and inducted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 2001.
