Abel Jean-Doyen, known professionally as Jean Doyen, was born on March 9, 1907 in Paris, France. He studied piano under Jeannine Barbulée, Louis Diémer, and Marguerite Long, making his debut as a soloist with the Colonne Orchestra in 1924. Doyen also contributed to Jacques Ibert's ballet Les Rencontres at the Paris Opera. From 1941 to 1977, he served as a piano professor at the Paris Conservatory, succeeding Marguerite Long. Notable students include İdil Biret and Philippe Entremont. Doyen was particularly known for his interpretations of French music from the 19th and 20th centuries, notably works by Maurice Ravel and Gabriel Fauré. His discography includes Fauré : L'oeuvre pour piano (1994) and Ravel : Musique pour piano vol. 1 and 2. He also composed a Requiem, a piano concerto, and various chamber works. Doyen passed away on April 21, 1982 in Versailles, France.
