Madder Rose was formed in 1991 in a Greenwich Village apartment by guitarist and songwriter Billy Coté and vocalist Mary Lorson. The duo’s early collaboration yielded the Bring It Down LP in 1993, followed by the album Panic On in 1994, featuring the single "Car Song", and achieved a place in John Peel’s Festive Fifty. Subsequent releases included Tragic Magic (1997) and Hello June Fool (1999). After a 20‑year hiatus, the group issued To Be Beautiful in September 2019 and No One Gets Hurt Ever in 2023, both on Trome Records. Throughout their career, Madder Rose toured extensively, including a main‑stage appearance at the 1993 Reading Festival, and collaborated with artists such as Kathy Ziegler, contributing scores to HBO’s What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann.
