Poster Children, an American indie rock band, was formed in 1987 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign by Rick Valentin and Rose Marshack. They released their demo, Toreador Squat, on cassette in 1989 and began playing clubs in the Midwest. That year, they also released their debut studio album Flower Plower. Poster Children signed with Warner Bros. Records subsidiary Reprise Records and released several albums, including Tool of the Man (1993), Junior Citizen (1995), and RTFM (1997). The band was known for their strong DIY ethic, creating their own artwork, T-shirt designs, and operating their own record label. They also incorporated electronic technology into performance art, including enhanced CDs, webcasts, and blogs.
