Terzij de Horde is a Dutch black metal, post-metal, and post-hardcore band from Utrecht, formed in 2010. The group’s name, which means “set apart from the horde,” is taken from a line in the poem “Einde” by the Dutch poet Hendrik Marsman. The band consists of vocalist Joost Vervoort, bassist Johan van Hattum, drummer Richard Japenga, and guitarists Demian Snel and Jelle Agema. The group was originally established in 2007 under the name “Liar Liar Cross On Fire”. In April 2010, the band performed its first show as Terzij de Horde alongside Altar of Plagues, Year of No Light, and Starve to mark the release of their debut EP, A Rage of Rapture Against the Dying of the Light. Their first full-length album, Self, was released in 2015 and focused on philosophical struggles regarding the problem of self. The group has performed at major festivals such as Roadburn and Le Guess Who? and toured extensively across the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. They followed their debut with the 2022 album In One of These, I Am Your Enemy and their third studio record, Our Breath Is Not Ours Alone, released in 2025.
