Kenneth Charles "Jethro" Burns was born on March 10, 1920 in Conasauga, Tennessee. He moved to Knoxville as a child and met Henry D. Haynes, forming the duo Homer and Jethro. After serving in World War II, they signed with King Records and later RCA Records. The duo won a Grammy for "The Battle of Kookamonga" in 1959. Burns introduced jazz harmonies to country music and continued his career post-Haynes' death, collaborating with Steve Goodman. He died from cancer on February 4, 1989, in Evanston, Illinois. In 2001, Homer and Jethro were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
