Mafia Trece was formed in 1996 by rappers from Paris’s 13th arrondissement, Bagneux and Ivry‑sur‑Seine, including members of Écho du Sud, Moovens’ and Southcide 13; the collective’s name, meaning “thirteen” in Spanish, reflects the area’s district number. The group’s early work, such as the 1997 maxi M13, introduced a theatrical, socially conscious rap style that drew on cinematic references and diverse cultural influences. Mafia Trece’s breakthrough came with the 1997 album Cosa Nostra, featuring collaborations with Oxmo Puccino, Diam’s and Pit Baccardi, and the single "À la recherche du mic perdu", which gained significant radio play on Skyrock and propelled the album to gold certification on 29 June 1999. In 1998 the collective signed with Sony, released the EP Lever de rideau and the album L'Envers du décor, the latter selling 80 000 copies. The group disbanded in 1999, after which members pursued solo careers: Yannick Silf, Moovens’, and others released material under the Quinte‑Flush label, while Cochise became a lawyer. Mafia Trece remains noted for being one of the first independent French rap groups to achieve gold status and for pioneering a narrative rap form that integrated cinematic and multicultural elements.
