Hawthorne String Quartet, an American string quartet based in Boston, was founded in 1986. Named after Nathaniel Hawthorne, the ensemble includes members from the Boston Symphony Orchestra: Mark Ludwig on viola, Ronan Lefkowitz and Si-Jing Huang on violin, and Sato Knudsen on cello. The quartet specializes in compositions by artists interned at the Terezín concentration camp during World War II. The Hawthorne String Quartet released their album Pavel Haas and Hans Krása's String Quartets in 1994. They have performed internationally, including at the Prague Spring International Music Festival in 2009 and 2010, and collaborated with artists such as composer André Previn. Their performances often highlight works by composers like Pavel Haas, Erwin Schulhoff, and Hans Krása, contributing to the preservation of Entartete Musik.
