Doris Helen Schetrompf, known professionally as Rose Lee Maphis, was born on December 29, 1922, in Baltimore, Maryland. She began her music career as a harmony singer and rhythm guitarist, performing with various groups including The Saddle Sweethearts. Her breakthrough came when she met her future husband Joe Maphis at the Old Dominion Barn Dance. Together, they became pioneers of the Bakersfield sound, appearing on numerous radio and television programs, notably as cast members of Town Hall Party. Their self-penned honky-tonk standard "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud, Loud Music)" was originally recorded by Flatt and Scruggs. After Joe Maphis's death, Rose worked as a seamstress at Opryland theme park and later volunteered at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. She passed away on October 26, 2021, in Nashville, Tennessee.
