John Ray Sechler, known professionally as Curly Seckler, was born on December 25, 1919, in China Grove, North Carolina. He learned to play the organ from his mother and the five-string banjo from local musician Happy Trexler. In 1949, Sechler joined Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs' Foggy Mountain Boys, contributing to over 130 recordings until 1962. After leaving the band, he took a break from music but returned in 1973 as part of Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass Band. Following Flatt’s death in 1979, Seckler led the band until his retirement in 1994. Notable albums include Bluegrass, "Don't You Know" (2003), and Sixty Years Of Bluegrass With My Friends (2005). Sechler was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2010. He passed away on December 27, 2017, just two days after his 98th birthday.
