Gurbachan Singh Sachdev, known as G. S. Sachdev, was born in 1935 in Lyallpur, Punjab Province (British India), India, and was a notable flutist specializing in Hindustani classical music. He began playing the Indian bamboo flute, bansuri, at fourteen under Vijay Raghav Rao. Additionally, he studied with Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar. In the late 1960s, he moved to San Rafael, California, where he taught at the Ali Akbar College of Music until 1976. His career included collaborations with Zakir Hussain and performances at significant festivals such as the Composer-to-Composer Festival in Telluride (1991) and the Other Minds Festival in San Francisco (2012). His discography included albums like Master of the Bamboo Flute, Volume II (1989), Flights of Improvisation (1993), and Incantations (1983). Sachdev died on June 24, 2018.
