James McCracken was an American operatic tenor born in the United States in 1926. McCracken began performing in a church choir and the Blue Jacket Choir while serving in the United States Navy. They made a professional debut in 1952 as Rodolfo in the Giacomo Puccini opera La bohème. McCracken performed with the Vienna State Opera and the Zurich Opera, achieving recognition in the title role of the Giuseppe Verdi opera Otello. In 1963, they became a principal dramatic tenor at the Metropolitan Opera, appearing in productions including Carmen, Aida, and Tannhäuser. Their discography includes the recordings Otello (1968), Carmen (1972), and Le prophète (1976). McCracken died in 1988.
