Gangubai Hangal, born on March 5, 1913, in Dharwad, India, was an Indian singer of Hindustani classical music. She began her musical training at 13 under Krishnacharya Hulgur and later studied under Sawai Gandharva. Hangal's career started with performances across India and for All India Radio stations until 1945. She initially focused on light classical genres before concentrating on khayal. Hangal received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1996 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2002. She passed away on July 21, 2009, at the age of 96. The Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University was established in her honor, and a postage stamp featuring her was released by India Post in September 2014.
