Tarika, a musical group from Madagascar, debuted in 1993 after relocating to London. The band's predecessor, Tarika Sammy, formed in the 1980s. Led by sisters Hanitra and Noro, the group incorporated traditional Malagasy music while exploring global influences. Their debut album Bibiango was released in 1994. Their second album, Son Egal (1997), was a collaboration with Senegalese musicians and addressed the 1947 Malagasy Uprising in Madagascar. In 1999, Tarika released the album D, which focused on dance music. Their album Soul Makassar (2001) dealt with the musical connections between Indonesia and Madagascar. Notable achievements include being featured in TIME magazine’s list of the "10 best bands on planet Earth" in 2001 and the release of their tenth-anniversary compilation CD, Tarika: 10 - Beasts, Ghosts & Dancing with History (2004).
