Karjalan Sissit was a Finnish and Swedish music group formed in Eskilstuna, Sweden, in 2000 by Markus Pesonen. The band's name is derived from Karelian units and honors Pesonen's uncle who fought in the Winter War against the Soviet Union. Initially, Karjalan Sissit blended dark, ambient sounds with orchestral elements, Finnish folk music, historical recordings, choirs and military percussion. Their debut album Karjalan sissit (2002) and subsequent release Miserere (2002) showcased these elements and were followed by Karjalasta kajahtaa (2004). The latter introduced a more aggressive style with pain-stricken screaming and dark Schlager songs. Notable releases include Tanssit on loppu nyt (2006), Fucking Whore Society (2009) and the single "Viinaa Pittää Juua" (2013). The group's music explored themes of hopelessness and depression.
