UP was formed in South Korea in 1996 as a mixed four‑member pop group, originally consisting of Kang Hyun, Kim Yong‑il, Lee Hae‑jung, and later joined by Park Sang‑ho, Lee Jung‑hee, and Lee Ken. Their debut single "1024 (10월24일)" appeared on the first album 1024 (10월24일) in May 1996, establishing the group’s presence in the Korean pop scene. In 1997, the release of the second album Second Birth introduced hits such as "Puyo Puyo" and "Bada", the latter achieving Number 10 on the MBC Ikigayo chart. The third studio album 發斤歲上 in 1997 featured the title track "Bright World" and further solidified their popularity, earning the group multiple Best New Artist awards at the 1997 Golden Disk, Seoul, KBS, SBS, and MBC music awards. Despite continued releases-形 in 1998 with tracks like "That Time" and "Jungle Law"-commercial momentum waned, and the group released a best‑of compilation UP BEST+1 in February 1999, after which the group officially disbanded later that year. Post‑disbandment, former member Park Sang‑ho pursued a solo career under the name Lion, while the group’s legacy remains documented in Korean pop history through their chart successes and award recognitions.
