James Muir Mathieson, born James Muir Mathieson on January 24, 1911 in Stirling, Scotland, was a Scottish musician known for his extensive work in the film industry. He began his musical journey by winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied piano and conducting. His early career included conducting various ensembles and orchestras, including a youth orchestra in Stirling. Mathieson's breakthrough came when Malcolm Sargent recommended him to Alexander Korda, eventually leading to his appointment as musical director for London Films in 1934. Throughout his career, Mathieson commissioned film scores from notable composers such as Arthur Bliss, Ralph Vaughan Williams, William Walton, and Benjamin Britten. He was responsible for the music direction, arrangement, or conduction of nearly a thousand films. Mathieson passed away on August 2, 1975.
