Philip Martin, born on October 27, 1947, in Dublin, was an Irish pianist, music teacher, and composer. He began his musical education at the Royal Academy of Music under Mabel Swainson and Franz Reizenstein, continuing with Lennox Berkeley, Richard Rodney Bennett, Louis Kentner, and Yvonne Lefébure. Martin's career took off as he taught at the Birmingham Conservatoire. His compositions span various genres, including orchestral works, concertos, choral pieces, and chamber music. Notable works include his Concerto for Piano No. 1 (1986), Concerto for Harpe (1993), premiered at the World Harp Congress in Seattle, and Symphony No. 1 (2004). Martin's discography includes releases on labels like Marco Polo and Altarus, featuring performances with the Irish National Symphony Orchestra under Kasper de Roo. As a pianist, he has recorded Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s complete piano works for Hyperion Records.
