The Murmaids, an American vocal trio composed of sisters Carol Fischer and Terry Fischer and Sally Gordon, were formed in North Hollywood, California. The Fischer sisters' father, Carl Fischer, was a notable composer and arranger, and their mother, Terry Sr., had a career in big band singing. The trio's first recordings took the form of demos produced by Mike Post, followed by a demo for producer Kim Fowley that led to their signing with Chattahoochee Records. Billed as the Murmaids, they recorded "Popsicles and Icicles", written by David Gates, which became a hit in January 1964, reaching number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song also topped the Music Vendor chart for one week before being succeeded by "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles. Despite this success, the group disbanded shortly after their television appearance on the Lloyd Thaxton show in 1964. Chattahoochee Records later re-formed the group with Sally Gordon and two other sisters in the early 1970s, releasing two singles, including "Paper Sun". The original Murmaids never received royalties from their hit single due to contractual issues. Terry Fischer passed away on 28 March 2017.
