Franco-Beninese multi-instrumentalist, producer, and beatmaker Alexis Hountondji is the creative force behind the music project KOFI. Since launching the project in 2008 with an eponymous EP, he has explored a rich, eclectic soundscape, blending influences from rock and hip-hop to dub and the traditional rhythms of West Africa, creating an unclassifiable style rooted in Beninese culture while embracing contemporary influences. KOFI draws deeply on his heritage and personal journey to craft immersive music that explores connections between identity, memory, politics, and spirituality.
Active on the independent scene for over twenty years, he’s collaborated with international artists like Blitz the Ambassador, Elom 20ce, Rocé, and Ocean Wisdom, all while cultivating the independence and authenticity of his own work. With KOFI, he offers a constantly evolving sound, choosing to stay out of the mainstream spotlight to focus on a sincere, committed sonic exploration.
