Melanie Doane is a Canadian singer and songwriter who learned multiple instruments at a young age. She was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Her career began with a role in Neptune Theatre's production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1986. In 1993, Doane released the EP Harvest Train, which led to her signing with Sony Music Canada. Her debut album, Shakespearean Fish, was recorded in 1996. The second album, Adam's Rib (1998), featured hits like “Waiting for the Tide” and “Happy Homemaker”, earning Doane a Juno Award for New Artist of the Year in 1999. After touring with artists such as Jann Arden and Great Big Sea, she left Sony Music Canada and released You Are What You Love (2003) through Actorboy Records and Warner Music Canada. The single “Still Desire You” reached number 5 at Canadian radio stations.
