Tackhead se formó en Nueva York en 1987 por el bajista Doug Wimbish, el batería Keith LeBlanc, el guitarrista Skip McDonald y el productor Adrian Sherwood, todos los cuales habían trabajado anteriormente con Sugarhill Gang y DJ Grandmaster Flash. En 1987, el grupo publicó el álbum Tackhead Tape Time, al que siguió Friendly as a Hand Grenade en 1989, en el que añadieron al vocalista Bernard Fowler y perfeccionaron su ritmo característico. El álbum Strange Things, publicado en 1990 por EMI, marcó su apogeo comercial e incluía singles como "Dangerous Sex" y "Class Rock"; el álbum recibió críticas mixtas y el grupo fue abandonado por la discográfica poco después. Una breve reforma en 2004 produjo una gira por Norteamérica y Europa, y una gira por el Reino Unido en 2022 en la que participó Mark Stewart. El legado de la banda continúa a través de lanzamientos póstumos como For the Love of Money (2014) y Powerstation 2.0 (2023), y la muerte de Keith LeBlanc en abril de 2024 cerró una carrera que tendió puentes entre el funk, el dub y el hip-hop industrial.
