Banda meteórica como tantas en la era punk, The Ruts pasará a la historia como los autores de una de las fusiones más exitosas de rock y reggae con The Clash. Formados en 1977, The Ruts empezaron como una de las innumerables bandas surgidas ese año. Fue su single revelación "In a Rut ", que John Peel pinchó en 1979, el que sacó a The Ruts del anonimato. El álbum Crack y su emblemático single 'Babylon's Burning ' fueron una auténtica bofetada en septiembre de 1979. Desgraciadamente, el vocalista Malcolm Owen no pudo resistir el deslumbrante éxito y sucumbió a una sobredosis de heroína el 14 de julio de 1980. Ruts D.C. se separó en 1983 tras la publicación de Animal Now (1981) y Rhythm Collision (1982), este último producido por Mad Professor. Ruts D.C. volvió a reunirse en 2007 para un concierto especial en el que actuó Henry Rollins en lugar de Michael Owen.
