La banda de funk de Chocolate Milk, que se dio a conocer a finales de la década de 1970, se pavoneaba con sus líneas de bajo, sus ritmos contoneantes y sus contagiosos ganchos en falsete, que más tarde fueron sampleados por muchos de los primeros artistas de hip-hop.

Formados originalmente en el instituto por Amadee Castendell, Frank Richard y Mario Tio, los amigos de Nueva Orleans se curtieron tocando para turistas en Bourbon Street y en clubes locales, y llamaron la atención del legendario productor Allen Toussaint. Acompañaron a Toussaint en sus actuaciones en directo y trabajaron para él como músicos de sesión en discos de Patti LaBelle, Irma Thomas y Lee Dorsey, antes de llegar a un acuerdo con RCA para grabar su primer álbum, "Action Speaks Louder Than Words", en 1975. El tema que daba título al álbum era una canción de protesta que alcanzó el número 15 en las listas de R&B de Billboard, y los siguientes singles, Girl Callin'', Say Won't Cha' y Groove City, cimentaron su reputación de banda de fiesta gloriosamente funky y les valieron comparaciones con sus contemporáneos Earth, Wind and Fire y Kool and the Gang.

Con Toussaint como coautor y productor de muchos de sus temas, los álbumes "Chocolate Milk", "We're All in This Together", "Comin" y "Milky Way" capturaron el espíritu y la atmósfera de la música callejera de la época pero, a medida que cambiaban las modas, la banda se trasladó a Los Ángeles y Memphis e intentó adoptar sonidos disco en los singles "Blue Jeans" y "Move Your Body Baby".
