Ana da Silva y Gina Birch formaron The Raincoats en 1977, mientras estudiaban en el Hornsey College of Art de Londres. Inspiradas por la actuación en directo de The Slits ese mismo año, da Silva y Birch fundaron The Raincoats con Ross Crighton a la guitarra y Nick Turner a la batería. Su primer concierto tuvo lugar el 9 de noviembre de 1977 en The Tabernacle. Firmaron con Rough Trade Records y publicaron su álbum de debut The Raincoats en noviembre de 1979, seguido de Odyshape en 1981 y Moving en 1984. Tras separarse en 1984, los Raincoats volvieron a unirse en 1993 y publicaron Looking in the Shadows en 1996.
