El irlandés Bob Geldof fue líder de una banda de rock, The Boomtown Rats, a finales de los años 70 y principios de los 80, y después actor en el papel del famoso cantante esquizofrénico Pink en la no menos famosa película de Alan Parker Pink Floyd: The Wall, antes de convertirse en un importante activista de la escena mundial del rock, instigando los proyectos Band Aid, Live Aid (1985) y Live 8 (2005), los mayores conciertos benéficos jamás organizados.
