Nico fue una figura enigmática que apareció en la escena musical a finales de la década de 1960. Nacida en Colonia en 1938, Christa Päffgen creció en condiciones difíciles en una Alemania devastada por la guerra. Sus rasgos llamativos y su porte escultural le ayudaron a convertirse en una modelo de éxito en la década de 1950, y los círculos sociales en los que se movía llamaron la atención del director de cine Federico Fellini. Fellini le pidió que apareciera en su película de 1960 "La Dolce Vita", y posteriormente apareció en la película de Andy Warhol de 1966 "Chelsea Girls".

Warhol empezó a dirigir The Velvet Underground y pidió a Päffgen que se uniera a ellos y actuara como "chanteuse". La idea de que Päffgen (que ahora se hacía llamar Nico) se uniera a la banda no fue recibida con entusiasmo por los miembros del grupo. Päffgen, cuyos talentos musicales eran bastante limitados, tenía una personalidad polarizadora que provocó conflictos dentro de la banda. Tenía opiniones controvertidas sobre la raza y era abiertamente antisemita, lo que a menudo ofendía a la gente que conocía durante su carrera.

Päffgen acabó abandonando The Velvet Underground y se lanzó como solista. A pesar de tener dificultades para cantar afinadamente (debido a su sordera parcial), se convirtió en una figura emblemática del mundo de la música y ha sido citada por muchos músicos importantes por su influencia en su trabajo. Murió en 1988 a consecuencia de las heridas sufridas en un accidente de bicicleta.
