Shura Cherkassky was a Russian-American concert pianist born Alexander Isaakovich Cherkassky in 1909 in Odessa, Russian Empire. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music under Josef Hofmann. During the 1940s, he resided in California and performed at the Hollywood Bowl. Cherkassky achieved a breakthrough in Hamburg in 1949 with a performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff's “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini”. He settled in London in 1961, where he performed until his death in 1995. His recordings include the album Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 3 (1994).
