The Human Abstract was an American progressive metalcore band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2004 by guitarists Dean Herrera and A.J. Minette, drummer Brett Powell, bassist Kenny Arehart, and vocalist Nick Olaerts. The group released a two-track demo before signing to Hopeless Records in 2005. In late 2006, Nick Olaerts was replaced by Nathan Ells, and the band released their debut album Nocturne. Their second album, Midheaven, was released in 2008, following further lineup changes, including Henry Selva eventually joining on bass. The band toured extensively with acts such as All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, The Devil Wears Prada, and August Burns Red, and appeared on the Vans Warped Tour in 2007 and the Take Action Tour in 2008, as well as touring with Dir En Grey later that year. After signing to eOne Music, they released Digital Veil in 2011. The band effectively ceased activity in late 2011 following additional lineup changes and departures.
