Heribert Beissel, born on March 27, 1933 in Wesel, Germany, was a conductor and music educator. He studied piano, conducting, and composition at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Köln under teachers such as Günter Wand and Frank Martin. Heribert Beissel's early career included roles as Korrepetitor and later 1st Kapellmeister at the Oper Bonn. In 1959, he co-founded the Chur Cölnische Kammerorchester Bonn. He served as Chefdirigent of the Symphoniker Hamburg from 1971 to 1986 and held professorships at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. Heribert Beissel was Generalmusikdirektor of the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Halle from 1990 to 1999 and the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt from 2001 to 2006. He won the 1st Prize at the Dirigenten-Wettbewerb des Deutschen Musikrats in 1962, received the Johannes-Brahms-Medaille in 1982, and was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz in 1998. Heribert Beissel passed away on June 11, 2021.
