Eugene George Istomin, born on November 26, 1925, in New York, was an American pianist. He began his musical education with Kiriena Siloti and later studied at the Mannes College and Curtis Institute of Music under Rudolf Serkin and Mieczysław Horszowski. In 1943, Istomin received the Leventritt Prize and made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy performing Chopin's Concerto in F Minor. His international career took off in 1956, performing with major orchestras worldwide. Notable collaborations include performances with conductors such as Bruno Walter, Leonard Bernstein, and Fritz Reiner. In 1961, Istomin formed a trio with Isaac Stern and Leonard Rose, which received a Grammy Award in 1970 for their recordings of Beethoven. Throughout his career, Istomin commissioned works from composers like Roger Sessions and Henri Dutilleux. He died on October 10, 2003, from liver cancer.
